Cover Letter – Tushar Garg
With an extensive understanding of the political agendas of the country and broader region which impact business, both as opportunities and challenges, I believe knowing enough to understand where the respective goldmines and landmines are. This is coupled with an ability to take a deep dive into the detail of individual markets to an extent that I could comfortably develop bespoke compelling narratives for a variety of audiences, both internal and external, Governments, Industry Associations and Executives amongst others, something very important from the standpoint of taking key personnel on-board and conveying an alignment to their varying priorities and lasting interests. Throughout my career, I have been respected by my peer group for pricing the art of asking the right questions when I/we/they don’t have all the detail. Perhaps, this portable skill has translated and positioned me as a “problem eliminator” as opposed to a conventional “problem solver”. I believe having a meaningful network alone is not sufficient to succeed in any role. The exact requirement is to weave a network regularly on themes which are of mutual interest, generating agendas and should make the individual on the receiving end look good in the eyes of his / her stakeholders, as much as the individual on the other end does.
While being innovative is part of every job description by default, a step further I associate a very high importance with History and recalling it to make points with a significant memory value. Here’s sharing an instance from my experience – While discussing IP matters with the DG of one of the 15 specialized agencies of the United Nations, to project India’s pioneering understanding of the subject matter as an authorized person from the Government of India who received him at New Delhi airport, during discussions, I attracted his attention towards Shah Jahan, 5th Mughal emperor of India who reigned from 1628 to 1658 and is best remembered for his architectural achievement “Taj Mahal”. However, he ordered that the hands of entire workforce be amputated, perhaps an unfortunate approach of protecting IP Rights in those days of one of world’s 7 wonder, so that they could never replicate it elsewhere. Later this point was referenced on multiple forums to position India as an IP pioneer globally.
Likewise, if we are a good student of history, we can be an effective communicator with veterans in any sector who are more often than not the people whose opinion matters. My portable skills offer opportunities for helping various business functions have productive interactions directly with officials, smooth new market entry and product launches, acquisitions, and eventually telling a story of business impact using business measures – such as revenue, client acquisition and margin – rather than metrics that are specific to the function which can be holistically measured in terms of ease of procuring license to operate in a particular jurisdiction, on-boarding first time partners, merchants, consumers amongst others. Long story short, I could be crucial to the success of your business plans and establish your reputation as a major player in the market in any part of the world. I have seen both sides of the fence, the private and public sector, during the first 15 years of career on purpose so as to prepare myself for this role.
I conclude by citing an observation to which I agree in-principle by Hong Kong based Andrews partnership: “In 2022, you cannot be a good Communications leader, or Marketing leader, or a great General Manager, without understanding the way your work impacts and is impacted by the interactions the business has with governments, regulators and civil society.”
