About this role
We need faster, more flexible architecture to allow us to provide outstanding customer experience. This role will be responsible for helping us understand, design, architect, exploit and innovate across all aspects of our Digital landscape. As we move further into an agile development and delivery model, part of this role will provide the direction on standard patterns and guard rails to balance common technology services with speed to market. Optimisation of Architecture strategy will pivot from siloed-based project approach to world-leading platform capabilities, providing both the broad and deep design patterns along with practical steps that will acceleration BTs Digital Transformation.
Job Dimensions:

• Owns solution design, development, delivery and operation of a single engineering efficiency platform enabling best practice Dev Ops practices.

• Engineering tooling across the full CI/CD/CT pipeline support common systems for areas such as source code management, pipelines, QA & Test, SRE tooling etc

• Utilises and leads the team to utilise best practice in terms of agile software development, DevOps/SRE and cloud native techniques

• Drives rapid and effective delivery of new platform features and tools as agreed with Product Owner

• Consistently meets agreed delivery dates

• Maintains excellent availability, reliability and performance

• Keeps abreast of latest practice and future trends to improve day to day practice and continuous improvement

Direct Reports Direct team management of overall team of 30-50 (BT colleagues + contractors) Career Level C Influences a virtual team more than 100 – 500 specialised technical architects, engineers, and experts. You’ll have the following responsibilities

• Owns solution design, development, delivery and operation of a single engineering efficiency platform enabling best practice Dev Ops practices.

• Engineering tooling across the full CI/CD/CT pipeline support common systems for areas such as source code management, pipelines, QA & Test, SRE tooling etc

• Utilises and leads the team to utilise best practice in terms of agile software development, DevOps/SRE and cloud native techniques

• Drives rapid and effective delivery of new platform features and tools as agreed with Product Owner

• Consistently meets agreed delivery dates

• Maintains excellent availability, reliability and performance • Expert in full-pipeline software engineering best practice and delivery

• Relevant experience of leadership of team leaders/other managers or equivalent operational responsibility

• Ability to work under pressure and tight schedule

• Experience of financial management of a cost centre

• The ability to inspire others to give of their best

• The ability to build strong working relationships within and outside the business

• Ability to objectively review performance issues and deal with them effectively

• Ability to set clear direction for others

• Proactive problem-analysis and design-thinking skill and capability to offer up innovative ideas to the business and others in BT.

• Self-starting, execution-driven leader that can lead teams and virtual teams to deliver their vision and create an environment of learning and continuous improvement.

• Strong organizational and time management skills, driving tasks to completion.

• Expert in managing 3rd parties both on an ongoing and performance management when required

You’ll have the following skills & experience

• Leads a team of ~50 BT employees and ~250 sub contractors

• Commands respect from a cross-functional team drawn from across the organisation

• Engineering tooling across the full CI/CD/CT pipeline support common systems for areas such as source code management, pipelines, QA & Test, SRE tooling etc

• Utilises and leads the team to utilise best practice in terms of agile software development, DevOps/SRE and cloud native techniques

• Drives rapid and effective delivery of new platform features and tools as agreed with Product Owner

• Consistently meets agreed delivery dates

Experience you would be expected to have:

• Mandatory 10+ years’ relevant working experience with a strong technical background and exposure to full pipeline software engineering best practice.

• Mandatory Delivery and supplier team management.

• Mandatory Strong, positive, network across BT which can be utlised in pursuit of delivering a best in class software engineering pipeline.

• Mandatory proven leadership ability across direct, virtual and peer teams.

• Mandatory Experience of working with Design, Dev, ASG and Change Management to implement same-day deployments.

• Mandatory Excellent knowledge in distributed architecture, Cloud, microservices, SOA, IaaS and PaaS.

• Mandatory: Experience of Agile and Test Driven Development (TDD) methodologies

• Desirable Experience of driving Dev Ops culture with focus on automation, self-healing flows.
