Dear Sir/ Madam,
My name is Shambhavi Anand and I conducted my doctoral research under the supervision of Prof. Gajendra Singh, at the Department of African Studies, University of Delhi. I submitted my thesis this year, in January 2023 and received my degree in June 2023. I have a Bachelor’s in History from Lady Shri Ram College for Women, and a Masters in History, specializing in Modern Indian History, from Hindu College, Delhi University. My doctoral thesis, titled Women’s Role in Struggle for Equality in Post-Apartheid South Africa, explores how cultural, economic, and political systems intersected to shape the lives and opportunities of women in post-apartheid South Africa. This included examining women’s participation in politics, the impact of social norms and expectations on women’s roles and opportunities, and the challenges women face in the economic sphere.
My thesis stressed why there’s an urgent need to focus on women if goals like development and equality are to be prioritized in a country’s agenda.
I furthered my interest in the field by doing an internship at the Ministry of Women and Child Development. This helped me gain valuable and firsthand experience in public policy and gender studies. Practical experience in the working of government initiatives (towards the protection of women and children) aligned perfectly with my interest in addressing broader issues of women’s empowerment, which is essential for equitable development in the social, economic, and political spheres. This position allows me to combine my academic background with meaningful research, aiming to produce policy papers that offer valuable insights to policymakers and garner social change.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Dr. Shambhavi Anand
