Job Description

• Bachelor’s degree in Math/Statistics/Engineering or other equivalent quantitative discipline
• 2+ years experience in Business Intelligence
• Advanced SQL Skills
• Experience with at least one scripting language (e.g. Python, Java, C++)
• Strong active listener with solid written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience delivering automated reports using reporting or data visualization tools such as Tableau, Business Objects, QlikView, Quicksight, or MicoStrategy
• Experience designing and working with engineers to build analytics reporting services for production environments

The Amazon Search team creates powerful, customer-focused search and advertising solutions and technologies. Whenever a customer visits an Amazon site worldwide and types in a query or browses through product categories, our services go to work. We design, develop, and deploy high performance, fault-tolerant distributed search systems used by millions of Amazon customers every day.
Within Amazon Search, the Data Science team brings expertise in constrained optimization and modeling data. We partner with teams across Amazon to bring data to active projects in addition to pioneering new insights, measurement methodology, and optimization strategies. This ensures the proper scientific use of data in launch decisions and that we are properly optimizing all trade-offs in product design. In addition to working with partners, we incubate new modeling techniques, and perform ‘front line recon’ on potential new models and tools.
Business Intelligence Engineer Responsibilities
As a successful BIE on the Search team, you will create automated and scalable analytical tools that provide insights into the customers shopping journey. This includes building the infrastructure for regular reporting on business performance and customer success, developing metrics of customer success, and constructing means for alerting to areas of concern. You will leverage the data to provide key data-driven insights, enable new opportunities, and innovate on behalf of our business customers.
You will identify specific and actionable opportunities to solve existing business problems in Search. You will need to be adept at communicating insights and recommendations to audiences of varying levels of technical sophistication. You will need to collaborate with engineering, research, and business teams to identify gaps and deliver solutions. You need to be able to use and orchestrate ETL of petabyte scale data which requires the latest tools (e.g Spark, python, SQL). You will need to understand the source data and be able to synthesize it down to a form suitable for answering specific business questions. Major responsibilities include:
Measure / Quantify / Understand

• Retrieve, synthesize, and present critical data in a format that is immediately useful to answering specific questions or improving system performance.
• Analyze historical data to identify trends and support decision making.
• Build automated tools to support analytics and reporting capabilities (e.g. dashboards, ETL pipelines).
• Create statistical definition of anomalous data, and develop methods to systematically identify these outliers. Work out why such examples are outliers and define any actions needed.

Detect / Decide / Recommend

• Given anecdotes about anomalies, generate automatic scripts to define anomalies (algorithmic anomaly detection), deep dive to explain why they happen, and identify fixes.
• Utilize code (Python or another object oriented language) for analyzing data constructing algorithms that power insights
• Build decision-making models and propose solution for the business problem you defined
• Conduct written and verbal presentation to share insights and recommendations to audiences of varying levels of technical sophistication.
• Master’s degree in Math/Statistics/Engineering or other equivalent quantitative discipline.
• 4+ years in relevant experience as data scientist, software engineer, business intelligence engineer, or equivalent.
• Advanced knowledge of SQL, shell scripting, Python/R, and MS excel.
• Familiarity with management concepts – planning, forecasting, and optimization – gained through work experience or graduate level education
• Strong understanding of BI technologies and their application including database warehousing and dashboarding
• Experience communicating with senior management (VP level decision makers) as well as with colleagues from computer science, operations research, and business backgrounds.
• Demonstrable track record of dealing well with ambiguity, prioritizing needs, and delivering results in a dynamic environment
• Experience in e-commerce or with search engines is a plus
