Job Context:

Birla Copper Unit at Dahej has a copper smelting operation with Captive Power plant & jetty, as well as a township. The unit manufactures refined copper, CC Rod and by products such as Sulphuric Acid, Phosphoric Acid, Di-Ammonium Phosphate, Gypsum, Copper slag, Fly Ash, Precious Metals like Gold and Silver. The number of independent areas having separate processes and technologies within the units for which materials and services are to be arranged includes- Smelter 1&3, SAP 1,2&3, Refinery 1, 2&3, Precious Metal Recovery 1, 2&3, Continuous Copper Rod Plants 1&2, Continuous Copper Rod Plant III, Rod Breakdown plant, Captive Power plant including boilers and turbines, Oxygen Plants, Slag Beneficiation plant and WTP and ETP and ABPS school which is 25 KM away from plant premises . The plant has old equipment that the manufacturer no longer services, as well as new installations. This job is responsible for procuring automation consumables and spares as well as automation and safety equipment as per specifications to support operations as well as appropriate storage and delivery in accordance with required specifications within the required time. Contractual services are required for automation installations and maintenance, especially for projects. Suppliers are widespread across multiple geographies and are sometimes unique. This role plays a very critical role in terms of the negotiation and procurement of automation items and equipment, safety items at competitive rates from Indian and overseas markets tomake these materials and services available at a remote place like Dahej for regular operations, projects, routine maintenance, and shutdowns. This role is responsible for ensuring compliance of all health, safety, and environment norms in view of the hazardous material being handled and produced.

Job Challenges

• Stringent safety and environmental norms, statutory regulations and licensing requirements limit options of storage and stacking patterns
• Space constraint for storage of material and uncertain consumption pattern poses a challenge to inventory management.
• Arranging and retaining contractual service providers and contract workforce at competitive rates, given the lack of organized infrastructural amenities at Birla Copper and fluctuating demand by internal customers owing to changing new initiatives at the plant.
• Numbers of pending overdue Indents which is a challenge to convert in PO due to different unique requirements.
• Sometimes Incomplete/inappropriate details of requirements may receive in indent which affect the work performance i.e., speed, quality, cost reduction, vendor selection, OTIF and sometimes causes rejection also.

Develop and implement effective plans for import shipment clearance, chemical procurement, and packing material procurement to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery.

Analyse demand forecasts, coordinate with suppliers, and ensure accurate scheduling of shipments and procurement to meet business needs.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align procurement plans with production and operational requirements.

• Operational Excellence

Ensure smooth and efficient operations by optimizing procurement processes and maintaining a high level of service quality.

Continuously assess and improve operational workflows to minimize delays and costs.

Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to track and ensure the efficiency of shipment clearance and procurement processes.

• Budgetary Controls

Maintain financial control over procurement activities and ensure all expenses align with the allocated budget.

Develop and manage procurement budgets, track expenses, and report variances.

Work closely with finance and management to ensure cost-effectiveness and compliance with budgetary constraints.

• Compliance

Ensure compliance with all regulatory and company policies, especially in relation to customs, chemical safety, and procurement standards.

Stay up to date with local and international regulations regarding import/export, customs, and hazardous materials.

Ensure all necessary documentation is completed accurately and on time, and that all activities comply with safety and legal standards.

Ensure that procurement and clearance activities support customer requirements and contribute to satisfaction.

Collaborate with internal stakeholders (e.g., production, sales) to ensure procurement meets customer demands in terms of quality, quantity, and timeliness.
