About the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)

The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high-quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.

The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional, and bilateral interests.

About the Positions

We are recruiting two Senior Research Officer (Economic) positions, to cover trade, economic, climate, energy, resources and environmental issues. This is an opportunity to make a contribution in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment at an exciting time in the Australia-India relationship. Bilateral ties have continued to strengthen under the Australia-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, signed in 2020, and following the virtual Leaders’ Summit between Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Morrison on 21 March 2022. The economic and trade relationship accelerated in 2022: with the signing of the India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (IndAus ECTA) in April, the launch of an Update to Australia’s India Economic Strategy in March, and the announcement of AUD 280 million in new initiatives and cooperation.

The Australian High Commission in New Delhi has been at the forefront of facilitating deeper economic relations, including by supporting a heightened tempo of ministerial engagement, building new relationships between governments, growing business and industry linkages, and providing the analysis and reporting to develop new policy.

The successful applicants are expected to support Australia’s economic interests with India, including by researching, analysing and preparing reports on a wide range of economic, trade, climate and energy issues in India, as well as India’s relationships with other countries on these issues. The applicants will also build and maintain relationships with key government, business, industry bodies, think tanks, academia and business media stakeholders, supporting the High Commission’s outreach and influence.

Employment conditions

Subject to the successful completion of six months probationary period, satisfactory medical check and background verification, the successful applicant/s will be offered a two year contract. The successful applicant will be expected to commence duty within one month of being advised of the selection for the position.
