BMJ is seeking two experienced copy editors to join our Production Team as Digital Content Editor. The role will support BMJ’s clinical improvement business, which includes our flagship clinical decision support tool BMJ Best Practice. BMJ Best Practice helps healthcare professionals and students around the world with step-by-step guidance on diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and prevention
You will also be responsible for ensuring the digital and textual integrity of our content. Working with the Head of Production, you will copy edit our content to ensure that published material is clear, concise and compatible with product style. You will be acutely aware of the intricacies of dealing with medical copy.
To be a successful candidate, you will be highly skilled and knowledgeable in copy editing complex medical content. You will have previous experience in working in content management systems, and have some understanding how XML works.
To successfully fulfil the role, you will be fluent in both American and British English (and understand the differences between them)
Responsibilities
Engage with colleagues to ensure the copy editing runs to schedule
Interact with editors to ensure content message is maintained through any editing
Deliver perfectly copy edited content to ensure that published material is clear, concise, consistent, accurate, and compatible with product style
Champion stylistic aspects of Best Practice content
Lead on manipulating, copy editing, and formatting digital content, ensuring that technical integrity is maintained
Qualifications
At least 3 years as a medical copy editor
Educated in biomedical science at degree level
Experience working in medical publishing
Experience of copy editing complex material to deadlines
High attention to detail and ability to concentrate for long periods
Excellent grammar, spelling and English (both British and US) language skills
Comfortable working with digital data formats such as XML, HTML
Familiarity with digital systems including good working knowledge of at least one content management system (CMS)
Able to communicate well with editorial, clinical, scientific, technical, business and production staff
Proven organisational skills, a team player, and highly motivated
