Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in Communications, Journalism, Multi-Media, Public Relations or other similarly related field required. Minimum two years of print, electronic and editorial experience in government, non-profit, or business environment. Demonstrated experience responding sensitively and patiently to inquiries from elected officials, staff, and the general public in a timely manner. Uses sound judgment to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions that are aligned with agency policies. Demonstrated experience writing, edit, and publish articles, brochures, and annual reports for publication. Demonstrated experience using Constant Contact, Adobe brand (or equivalent) design/publishing software to create reports and other documents. Demonstrated experience operating video equipment and digital camera. Demonstrated experience working effectively, both independently and collaboratively within an organization and with outside agencies. Knowledge of script writing and interviewing. Demonstrated experience coordinating several projects simultaneously with a series of continuous deadlines. Ability to respond to emergency situations during and outside normal business hours. Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.
Job Duties
Under Board of County Commissioners (BCC) direction, represents the BCC in carrying out specific programs (i.e., preparation and distribution of news releases; initial point of contact for all media requests; preparation and/or presentation of information/programs; planning and development of displays; coordination of news conferences). Responsible for development and production of County communication programs, projects and services. Contributes to quality government channel programming and/or new initiatives for broadcast. Attends regular sessions of the BCC and other meetings and events as assigned. Responsible for photographing regular sessions of the BCC and operating video equipment as required. Delivers proactive communication and dialog through county website and sponsored social media outlets – Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, G+, or other online communities (and stays abreast of emerging media). Translates complex ideas and topics into easily understood messages for various audiences and across multiple platforms. Writes clear, concise communications appropriate to a variety of targeted audiences. Uses a variety of diverse technology tools to enhance communications, including MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and web-based programs (e.g. Dropbox, Prezi). Coordinates events and programs, in collaboration with staff and others. Writes, edits, photographs, prepares layout, and arranges for publication of the county’s monthly newsletter and other informational publications including the county’s annual report. Provide monthly analysis of website, YouTube and social media traffic using Google Analytics or other similar tools. Operates a motor vehicle and performs other related duties and/or special projects as may be assigned.
Under Community and Economic Development (CED) direction, develops and executes a communication strategy for the CED department, including but not limited to the activities identified in this section. Assist with researching, developing, writing copy for and maintaining up-to-date information on CED department website. Coordinate CED events and programs in collaboration with staff and other agencies, including securing event space, promoting events through email and social media, manage invitation and attendee lists, obtain catering and audio-visual services, and event registration. Staff a department or county booth/table/display at CED trade shows, conferences or other events. Responsible for coordination and scheduling of CEO testimonials, holiday greetings, or other special CED projects, including but not limited to: writes script, schedules interview, conducts interview, edits/produces final product using in-house software; writes, edits, photographs, prepares layout, and arranges for publication of CED newsletter and other informational publications including the CED annual report; provide monthly analysis of CED website traffic using Google Analytics or other similar tools; and manages a complicated schedule of CED publications, projects and events while being capable of responding to unexpected communication needs.
Works alone or with other persons in short- or long-term team projects to resolve problems or conflicts in any area of county operations or to complete assigned projects at the direction of any county supervisor or Department Head when assigned. Participates in cross-training and maintains proficiency in area of cross-training as necessary. New and other related duties as assigned. Works aggressively to reduce or eliminate safety/risk concerns in current position or work location.
