What You’ll Do
Join our dynamic team as an Engineer specializing in AI & Machine Learning, where you’ll contribute to pioneering projects in natural language processing, computer vision and applying them in initiatives like conversational systems, hierarchical classification (of products and services to tax codes), document intelligence (classification, extraction, summarization), etc. This role is crucial for automating workflows and enhancing the efficiency of partner teams at Avalara. Your responsibilities will encompass the full lifecycle of machine learning model developmentxe2x80x94from conceptualization and data collection and pre-processing to model training, evaluation, and deployment. This position demands a blend of technical prowess in the fields of software development and a deep-seated understanding of machine learning where you’ll work closely with a cross-functional team that includes tax experts, data scientists, and software developers to ensure our systems are performant and accurate.

• Develop and deploy REST APIs and cloud-based web applications. Follow best practices and established standards, ensuring efficient processing (low latency), seamless integration and functionality.
• Create, run and maintain ETL pipelines.
• Create dashboards for monitoring key system metrics and enable alerts.
• Build on top of the foundational MLOps framework to manage model serving, dataset versioning, and lifecycle processes.
• Develop, evaluate and deploy machine learning models. Conduct in-depth analysis, feature engineering and optimization to improve model performance.
• Make informed data-driven decisions by interpreting test results and performance metrics to help steer experimental efforts.
• Leverage best practices in software development, including Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) along with appropriate functional and unit testing in place.
• Write, review, and maintain high-quality code that meets industry standards, contributing to the project’s technical excellence.

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop, test, and deploy integrations.

What You’ll Need to be Successful

• Demonstrated prowess in system development, machine learning, applied in real-world scenarios.
• Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities with capability to navigate complexities with the data and systems.
• Drive innovation by researching and applying the latest technologies and methodologies in machine learning and software development.
• Proficiency in developing and debugging software with a preference for Python, though familiarity with additional programming languages is highly valued and encouraged.
• Strong collaboration and communication skills, capable of working effectively with cross-functional teams.

Desirable Qualifications

• Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning. A Masters degree is a plus.
• 9+ years of experience in software development within production environments, along with experience in building machine learning models.
• Proficiency working in cloud computing environments, and software development best practices, and machine learning frameworks.
• Demonstrated ability to keep up with technological advancements and apply them in a fast-paced work environment.
• Familiarity with algorithms, and data structures.
• Good analytical, design and debugging skills.
