Primary duties: A fragrance chemist designs fragrances for various uses. These professionals typically specialize in one industry, such as perfume, candles, food or cleaning products. Their responsibilities include inspecting raw materials, developing new fragrances, analyzing the chemical composition of a substance, recording their creation process and reviewing the flashpoint, refractive index and gravity of a substance. They might also perform experiments to evaluate the quality and efficacy of a perfume.

Chemists in the perfume industry keep up-to-date knowledge on regulations in the beauty industry. They also may perform specific research and set goals to create perfumes with special qualities, such as an allergy-sensitive perfume or the combination of specific scents.
