Job Description

The Chase CCB Release Engineering team is responsible for enhancing the desktop and mobile experiences for current and prospective Chase customers by driving a release process end-2-end that delivers software quickly and minimizes customer impacts. “End-2-end” means managing software to be released in test (unit and QA), pre-production, and production environments in order to deliver the highest level of quality in a technology implementations / release. “Minimizing customer impacts” means that the role will identify key release risks and work to mitigate those risks such that as defects / issues are countered, the impact to customers is kept as low as possible. It also involves consulting with Product Owners to identify the optimal delivery sequence for code that minimizes risk and facilitates the delivery of new features and flows.

Release Engineers (REs) are responsible for the release lifecycle, focusing on coordinating various aspects of production and projects into one integrated solution. They are responsible for ensuring that resources, timelines, and the overall quality of the process are all considered and accounted for. In addition, they will look at a software engineering process and work to automate the delivery aspects of those processes. They are involved in planning, tracking, risk management, testing, communication, and release/deployment.

Release Engineers have a strong technical skillset, SRE mindset, and a thorough understanding of the agile development process. They are part of a team that dives into the platform architecture of the application CI/CD environment. They are involved in the development and enhancement of the existing IaaC and containerization and expanding CI/CD observability and tools used as part of the release cycle. In addition, the function focuses on expanding new features to the internal applications used as part of the suite of services leveraged by the app dev and QA teams. Release Engineers help develop and lead new technology choices and engineering, collaborating with product management, user experience for functional and non-functional requirements and deploying cloud native applications to test, UAT and environments.

Depending on the news of individual products, Release Engineers may be dedicated or shared, and depending on where the product is in its lifecycle, REs may be centralized or federated.

Responsibilities –

• Minimum 7 years hands-on and good knowledge on Middleware Technologies – Tomcat , Apache, IBM Http Server and WebSphere Application Server.
• Plan and communicate release windows and approved release schedule to Stakeholders
• Manage all cross-team dependencies and consider business priorities when scoping, planning, and certifying an application/change release into the testing and production environments.
• Maintain and publish release calendar, and release status against that calendar
• Review and coordinate completeness of release artifacts, including test evidence
• Drive compliance to entry and exit governance criteria from QA to production
• Monitor and control all release activities, including emergency releases
• Facilitate release planning and go-no-go sessions with Stakeholders
• Manage and identify risks that may affect release scope, release duration, environments
• Produce and maintain standard deployment runbooks
• Develop scripts and automation tools used to build, integrate, and deploy software releases to various platforms.
• Lead / Support Continuous Improvement for the Release Engineer function
  • Evaluate and maintain RE processes, quality gates and deliverable
  • Adopt new technologies and development of related support processes. E.g. operationalization of CI/CD, Gaia, Dark Canary.
• Facilitate resolution and communication of cross-organization decisions, standards, and issues.
• Design and manage the Configuration Management process for transferring application-related changes between the development environments and the production environment.
• Provide input to QA Management when planning the testing process and defining the approach for user acceptance testing. Help plan and support user acceptance testing, and issue resolution.
• Adhere to Configuration Management standards and methodologies when overseeing the software development cycle through implementation into production.
• Ensure scheduled changes take place, with policy, regulatory and specified control adherence.
• Confirm all application documentation is properly updated with signoffs. Promote effective teamwork and manage interpersonal issues. Lead preparation activities for major events delivered by the team.
• Have strong communication skills, able to mentor on DevOps / SRE principles and practices.

• Manage activities across all Digital teams (e.g. PMs, Dev, QA, DevOps, etc…).
• Having good knowledge and hands on on scripting technologies such as shell scripting, Python, Ansible.
• Have knowledge on Monitoring tools such as Dynatrace ,Splunk.
• Have knowledge on at least one public cloud technologies such and AWS and Kubernetes is an added advantage.
• Troubleshoot minor/major incidents and contribute to resolution through post-mortems
• Engage with tools and operations teams to address failure patterns and incidents
• Develop automation tools for efficient, noiseless alerting, toil and technical debt
• Build and drive adoption for greater self-healing and resiliency patterns.
• Lead and participate in performance tests, identifies the bottlenecks, opportunities for optimization and capacity demands
• Work effort is split between operational work and engineering work
• Be part of the 24×7 support coverage as needed

This is a Global role. CCB Release Management has staff located in the U.S. and India. Must be able to collaborate and work seamlessly across the entire team and make necessary allowances for time difference between locations. In fact, help the team take advantage of the time difference to optimize service delivery, delivery efficiency, and minimize impact on the teams.

Qualifications

• BS/BA degree or equivalent experience in an software engineering discipline
• Proficient in Middleware Technologies – Tomcat, Apache, Websphere and IBM HttpSERver.
• Proficient in configuration management tools.
• Proficient in at least one software language (e.g. Python, Java, Go, etc.).
• Understand and can contribute to the software delivery lifecycle
• Expertise in application, data and infrastructure architecture disciplines
• Proficient knowledge of one or more infrastructure components (e.g. networking, cloud services, orchestration tools, containerization, compute and storage systems)
• Capable of managing service-level changes to a system or service
• Hands-on experience with cloud deployment, monitoring, and ops analysis tools such as Kubernetes, Prometheus, Elasticsearch, Grafana, Kibana, Splunk, DynaTrace, etc is an added advantage.
