The Role
As a UX designer, there are various aspects of the role. This also depends on the nature of the project and deliverables expected. Below are some of the essentials of the role.
Project understanding
Study and gather information about the project, gain an in-depth knowledge of the vision, goals, stakeholder expectations, users, and project execution.
Deep dive into features and ensure that questions relevant to the business are asked to users.
Gather preliminary information about the clients, competition, existing patterns, business model, and so on.
Using the understanding to sketch our user journey maps, service blueprint and experience maps.
Research with users
Familiarity with methods of research and when to use what technique.
Understand the elements of the UX process and gauge what is best applicable to the project.
Uncover the personas facing problems with stakeholder interviews.
Uncover user problems by conducting research with end users.
Determine the best way to test with users.
Prepare interview scripts for moderated, set up questions for unmoderated interviews.
Interview and observe users to gather insights and feedback.
Analyse the data gathered from interviews.
Present the data and insights gathered to stakeholders and users.
Communication
Constant and effective communication with stakeholders to convey the roadmap, expectations, and findings.
Good communication skills for very crisp interview and to probe users on their pain-points.
Convey findings in impactful Playbacks to stakeholders and users.
Good storytelling to bring out the value of the data uncovered.
Clearly explain design decisions taken, able to explain user’s point of view and contribute to discussions and decisions on features and functionalities.
Design
Utilize and build on the project/organization branding elements/themes.
Able to decide the best design patterns and layouts.
Aware of using design systems to drive consistency.
Good understanding of design principles, color theory.
Aware of accessibility standards.
Aware of trends in the design industry to suggest the best solutions.
Collaboration
Understands best practices of design hand-off to development team.
Constantly communicate with the Product and development teams.
Constantly communicate with the team to understand feasibility or resolve conflicts/confusion.
UX Process
Follow the UX process, ensure iterations with the team and users to uncover any issues before the design moves to development.
Suggest the best tools available in the market to ensure a smooth workflow.
Comfortable writing user stories, phases in design and collaboration tools.
Constantly communicate the status of the design and research work.
Note: It is a big plus if the UX designer has the skills of a UX writer or content writer in projects where there is no dedicated content resource.
