A Day in the Life

As a member of the MEIC you will collaborate with the broader Medical Devices engineering teams in the US. You will enable design development of medical devices/products and the associated infrastructure capability building elements in close conjunction with the Global teams. Principal RD Engineer to be responsible for supporting the design and development of products for the Surgical Stapling RD organization from concept tocommercialization. The ideal candidate has a strong background in the development of surgicalproducts/devices. This person will be expected to generate solutions that are imaginative,thorough, practical, and consistent with organizational objectives.

What is the work you will be doing?

1. Work with a multidisciplinary team to design and develop innovative healthcare solutions from concept through commercialization.

2. Be creative and apply solid mechanical engineering design skills while following design controls to develop new medical devices.

3. Develop and maintain CAD models, assemblies, and Bill of Materials utilizing Creo and Windchill.

4. Creating detailed component and assembly drawings utilizing GDT.

5. Work with outside suppliers on material selection and specifications for components, subassemblies, and finished assemblies

6. Adhere to MBD DRM objectives

7. Performing analytical modeling / analysis in support of meeting design requirements.

8. Creates and evaluates prototypes to generate concept and model approvals.

9. Interacts with contract services (design and manufacturing), materials suppliers, participates in DFM and DFA processes to access component and assembly manufacturability

10. Participating in FMEAs (Design Process), Usability Analyses, and follows up on generated recommendations

11. Participate and support pre-clinical labs, observe cases in hospitals and interact with customers.

12. Exercises considerable latitude in determining deliverables of assignments, with limited oversight from manager.

13. Coaches, reviews, and delegates work to lower-level engineers.

14. Presenting information and communicate effectively with the cross functional core team

15. Generating and documenting intellectual property while working with the Legal Department.

16. Researching and integrating new technologies and processes

17. Adhering to all Medtronic safety policies and procedures.

Must Have :

1. Bachelors Degree in Mechnaical Engineering with minimum 15 years of design experience.

2. Experience in AI and Stapling products.

3. Proficiency with 3D CAD software (Creo preferred). Ability to create parts and assemblies utilizing best practices.

4. Thorough understanding and application of drafting practices, GDT, ASME drawing standards.

5. Experienced in performing Tolerance Stack Analyses (Excel, CeTol 6, Monte Carlo simulations). Knowledge of component measurement, testing and statistical analysis including statistical software (Minitab preferred).

6. Advanced knowledge of mechanical analysis utilizing hand calculations and FEA software (CREO Simulate and Mechanism, or ANSYS preferred).

7. Ability to design and build breadboards and working prototype models of devices using rapid prototyping resources (3D printing, SLA, CNC machining, and injection molding).

8. Solid understanding of DFM and DFA principles to create robust components and assemblies.

9. Well versed in component manufacturing processes (Plastic injection molding, Extrusion, Metal injection molding, Sheet metal stamping, Machining, Powdered metal)

10. Excellent communication skills both oral and written.

11. Ability to work independently or effectively collaborate with others as part of a team

12. Discipline to adhere to schedules and tasks based on instructions/guidance from engineering leadership.

13. Basic understanding of human anatomy and physiology.

14. Experience with pre-clinical animal models

15. Experience working with electromechanical assemblies

16. Familiarity with PC Boards, DC motors, Flex Circuits, and electromechanical switches

17. Experience with Six Sigma (DFSS) or DRM
