Job Description
Responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining user assistance and training documentation for Oracle applications. Collaborate with multiple internal stakeholders to design our next generation of user assistance technology and implementing new embedded help delivery mechanisms that improve how technical information is delivered to our customers. Work with development teams to implement code for new user assistance mechanisms.
Create user assistance for your assigned product, which may include training courses, certification exams, documentation, tutorials, videos, embedded help in UI, sample code, eBooks, infographics following user assistance development processes, templates, and standards using various tools and systems. This will include user assistance for conceptually complex areas, documenting the most technically challenging parts of the product(s) or product area(s). Lead discussions at user assistance and feature team meetings. Participate in preparation of design documents for major changes in user assistance and be responsible for detailed review of features and assignments to team. Collaborate with internal stakeholders to develop user assistance vision documents which detail the product use cases, common tasks, and user personas. Utilize multimedia technologies and techniques in enhancing the effectiveness of user assistance. Lead and drive cross-team or cross-LOB projects and initiatives. Organize, teach, facilitate, and observe pilots taught by more junior UA developers. Create support collateral for pilots where appropriate (wiki pages for course pilots). Develop, upgrade, and maintain basic, advanced, or new/emerging courses according to standards, using the latest tools. Contribute to design, coordination, and validation of major enhancements to user assistance practices, patterns, processes, and standards.
Leading contributor individually and as a team member, providing direction and mentoring to others. Work is non-routine and very complex, involving the application of advanced technical/business skills in area of specialization. Demonstrate functional knowledge of Windows and Linux or UNIX. Demonstrate understanding of four of the following technologies: XML, XHTML, XSL, DITA, CSS, DOM, RDBMS, CGI, PHP, REST, Java servlets, or XML schemas for user assistance types, and information and learning architecture. Have co-authored and delivered presentations at industry or technology conferences on topics related to Oracle products, technologies, or user assistance. Possess a degree, certificate, or relevant industry experience. Suggested majors include English, technical writing, communications, instructional design, software engineering, or computer science. Minimum of 8+ years of user assistance development or relevant experience.

Our team develops various forms of user assistance – including UI help, user and implementation documentation, video tutorials, and training deliverables – for Oracle Fusion Cloud Financials software apps. We also participate in product design and development.

Advocate for our users
Collaborate with UX and product team counterparts to achieve simple and intuitive UI design in our software products
As part of that collaboration, develop customer-facing UI text – including messages, field labels, and tip text – that’s clear and helps users prevent mistakes and be successful
Write, create, and build
Design and write engaging, clear, conversational, and minimalist DITA-based documentation that follows company style standards and is appropriate for software implementers, end users, and system administrators
Make use of effective visual information design strategies to create infographics, flow diagrams, and other visuals that aid understanding
Create, edit, and deliver multimedia videos that convey concepts, demonstrate processes, guide decision making, or achieve other learning objectives
Develop software simulations so that users can try out tasks in a controlled environment
Manage your time, own your work, and be our team’s face to the world
Manage your own user assistance and product design tasks and deliverables while working with scrum teams in an Agile development framework
Participate in development discussions and scrum events
Represent the User Assistance team in a variety of cross-product teams and projects
What you need to be successful
BA/BS or MA/MS in Technical Communication, English, Instructional Design, User Experience Design, Interaction Design, or a related field, with at least 7 years of experience in writing software documentation and developing related forms of user assistance.
Must have
Outstanding written and oral communication skills; you must be able to prepare written communication and convey information clearly with an approachable, conversational tone
Demonstrated proficiency in understanding user needs and developing various forms of user assistance that best meet each need
Understanding of and experience with DITA; proficiency in designing and developing content that follows DITA standards
Experience working in an XML-based authoring tool
Training, knowledge, or experience in user experience design, interaction design, or web design
Demonstrated proficiency with a range of visual information design techniques
Experience in UX writing/UX content design
Ability to effectively multi-task, prioritize, schedule, and meet aggressive deadlines; proven track record of delivering on time and to quality metrics
Demonstrated ability to operate independently and as part of a larger, virtual team; ability to develop working relationships with other internal groups to meet objectives and complete tasks
Experience in mentoring peers as well as junior team members, leading team initiatives, and modeling and championing best practices
Desire to collaborate with and support your stakeholder team members to achieve mutual success
Positivity and empathy
Nice to have
Experience in instructional design and training development
Experience with tools to develop software simulations
Understanding of and experience with enterprise resource planning and financials business processes
Broad understanding of and experience with agile software design and management
Experience in developing and maintaining chatbots
