The Communications Officer will be part of the UNDP India Country office Communications team of committed and experienced development professionals whose primary role is to support India to achieve the 2030 Agenda. Under the overall supervision of the Communications Specialist, the incumbent will support the development and implementation of the communications and advocacy strategies to increase reach and engagement with partners, media and the public to leverage support, commitment and resources for UNDP in India. The incumbent will also be required to promote a client-oriented and results-based working approach in UNDP. The Communications Officer will work with all UNDP India staff, international and national media, subject matter experts, partners including the Government, donors and civil society organizations. The Communications Officer (writer/editor) will be expected to work towards and report against the following results and deliverables: Develop, edit and design a range of communications material for UNDP: Develop audience-centric and web-friendly human-interest stories on UNDPs initiatives and key achievements from the field. Facilitate the editorial process for stories, documents, donor reports, publicity materials and other content, including approval by relevant technical sections and serves as the primary print editor for grammar, writing style, etc. for all content received, according to UN/ UNDP editorial guidelines. Review, re-write and undertake fact check of a range of materials and documents including web stories, project factsheets, photo blogs, talking points, reports, press releases, op-eds, forewords and prefaces by senior management and so on. Support the development, review, adaptation and editing of web content for UNDP India website to improve digital engagement: Translate the work of UNDP India in a web-friendly format and design for external audiences and donors. Support the development of a digital content strategy for UNDP in India for strengthening outreach and social media engagement. Oversee, edit and production of publications and reports for UNDP: Ensure adherence to brand guidelines for every publication developed, published or disseminated from the office. Undertake quality assurance of publications and report and ensure high quality, reader-friendly products. Work closely with procurement in developing a roster of vetted editors and writers. Respond to government requests for support on developing knowledge products. Coordinate translation of communications materials for UNDP: Oversee and coordinate translation of communications products into multiple languages and ensure high quality and timely deliverables. Be able to undertake small/ quick translations in Hindi, if required. Work closely with procurement in developing a roster of vetted translators. Advocacy for advancing a Policy-Oriented Agenda: Preparing key materials and content for strategic policy and public advocacy: Identify and communicate relevant information for a variety of audiences for advocating UNDPs mandate. Maintain a functional and active network with a wide range of stakeholders to promote better understanding of UNDPs mandate and to support its advocacy efforts. Create visibility and support UNDPs capacity to advocate: Promote awareness of UNDPs work internally and externally through dissemination of information and materials. Maintain networks and knowledge assets for leveraging visibility and publicity. Maintain an active network of media and civil society partners, to connect and leverage support for UNDPs work and showcase its key advocacy efforts. Leadership and Influence: Mentor team members and support their skilling and development. Support the Communication Specialist in Communication strategy and team development. Competencies Demonstrated ability and prior work experience in dealing with sensitive issues and confidential content. Required Skills and Experience Education: Advanced Masters degree or equivalent in journalism or communication or social science or any related field. Experience: At least 2 years relevant working experience in development communication or journalism or any closely related field. Additional years of relevant experience is highly desirable. Excellent knowledge of MS Office, MS Publisher and standard internet tools. Previous experience in developing and implementing publications strategies. Experience in using social media platforms, computers and office software packages, good knowledge and experience in handling of web-based management systems. Language Requirement: Excellent written and oral communications skills in English are essential. Excellent knowledge of Hindi is also required. Travel: Willingness to travel to remote/rural areas, at short notice, if required.
