MAIN JOB PURPOSE:
This Job description is for the position of Competitor Intelligence Manager South Asia. CI’s mission is to drive a competitor focused mindset and support a culture of anticipating & outflanking our competitors.
JOB SUMMARY
CI aims to add value to business by identifying competitive data, recognizing strategic patterns of competitors across categories, regions, time and providing value-added predictive insights & challenges to articulate strategy and sharpen execution plans where big money or major plays are at stake. Located in Mumbai, India, the CI managers primary responsibility is to help Unilever South Asia win in the market by:
leading and driving the South Asian CI agenda and to deliver Competitor Intelligence to SA provide leading edge CI capability and support to the SALT and the SA CCBT‘s lead key CI initiatives (War Games) and the CI training programme for South Asia provide deep understanding of all MNC’s for the South Asian business, but especially also deep understanding of relevant regional players domiciled in South Asia and tech disruptors to the global CI team from organisation and capability viewpoints as on threat development continue to develop leading edge CI tools, processes and sources to improve CI capability demonstrating the value of CI and promote its usage across the SA business
For this role, its core customers are the SALT and the South Asian CCBT’s. The level of exposure to senior leadership requires:
Absolutely up-to-date knowledge of key competitive events within the South Asian cluster and key developments that might affect their actions e.g. major economic and other market trends in digital, social media, e- and m-(mobile)commerce.
Ability to translate information into insights that are forward-looking, identify predictive trends with firm recommended actions. Bring the opportunities and threats to life in impactful presentations.
Holistic understanding of competitors’ leadership, performance, strategies, operating business models and activities.
Good “gut” instincts to prioritize – an overview across brands, categories, clusters and competitors
In addition, it calls for a building of an enhanced CI understanding and action across the SA cluster via:
Coordinating CI support to the South Asian business and running War Games and analytics etc
Promoting widespread use of best practice into CCBT’s, especially War Gaming and benchmarking
Developing a cross functional system of early warning signals for information that can be obtained in line with UL CoBP using new leading tech capabilities like big data analytics and AI.
Timely provision of key country CI information coupled with continual building of new Competitor Intelligence sources, processes and best practice to develop a leading edge CI capability.
Specifically:
Lead significant country/category War Games and Challenge Workshops as called on in South Asia Communicate significant moves of the competitors e.g. major acquisitions, major leadership changes Conduct regular analyses on the country/category identifying key competitor trends, anticipating key competitor moves. Good diagnostics into competitors’ “repeatable model” Develop forward-looking insights on likely competitor ambition and actions for strategic reviews Train the CCBT’s in External Focus and CI techniques (e.g. benchmarking / shadow costing). Improve awareness and skills in Competitors Intelligence within the business as well as Counter Intelligence Present competitor updates and insights at leadership meetings Perform deep dives on competitor e.g. company strategy; organisation and leadership; company financial performance and ambition; category performance and capabilities; investment patterns; vulnerabilities and strengths; functional capability; scenario planning and shadow costing. Predict likely actions and category / brand / geographical hot spots Establish and embed early warning signals into the business processes including the usage of new and emerging digital technologies like big data, machine learning and AI Lead shadow costing, shadow P&L and like-for-like comparison of competitors’ financial performances
Team Resources: There is one WL 1 analyst to support the South Asian CI manager who he/she is responsible for the manage and develop.
KEY REQUIREMENTS
Candidates should have high potential and a strategic mindset. This job is about connecting the dots as to the future implications to UL, not merely reporting what has happened. As result the job provides exposure to strategy formulation and development within the company and exposure to high levels of Unilever management including the SALT.
Candidates should have a good knowledge of Finance and other non financial topics, which influence our market share gain. The role requires a blend of creativity, analytics and a bias to action which allows patterns to be perceived in sparse data, interpretation and understanding of consequences and an ability to develop an action plan to combat.
The candidate should have had practical exposure to global competitors through the marketplace.
Interpersonal, communication skills and a pro-active attitude are required but in addition the candidate should be able to take a holistic view.
Candidates need to have high adaptability to a constantly changing role as the CI function is constantly evolving to meet the changing situation it finds in the competitor space. Key Competencies: Inner Game
