What is primary need, technical challenge, and/or problem you will be responsible for?

We need someone who is passionate about ensuring reliability in the operation and deployment of a growing portfolio of SaaS products. Who will be part of a small and globally diverse team that will enable engineering teams across the globe. You will be part of creating and driving reliability initiatives such as SLI definitions, production readiness criteria and tooling to alleviate toil. You will be working on a modern Kubernetes technology stack using such technologies as Prometheus, Fluxcd, Terraform amongst others.

Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

Working across the Tanzu SaaS engineering teams you will become completely familiar with the design and operation of the component services. You will be fluent in SRE principles and be able to define an suitable SLI for a given product. You will become familiar with the technologies required to implement successful observability solutions, such as prometheus & wavefront. You will be building and deploying Kubernetes services and integrating them into CICD solutions such as Fluxcd, Jenkins and Concourse.

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

• Your time will be split between collaborating with engineering teams to determine reliability needs and create tooling and infrastructure to meet these needs.

• You will be collaborating with a globally diverse team and will be using asynchronous tools.

• You will be working with a comprehensive and modern technology stack such as Golang, Kubernete, Prometheus, Calico, Velero etc.

• Spend time learning VMware’s standard operations, products, and improving your engineering and professional skills. We want you to be curious, learning both from team members and individual study.

Required Skills

• 7+ years of industry experience and 4+ years of relevant experience in a Development, SaaS Operations, Site Reliability, or comparable Cloud Engineering position with a demonstrated track-record of execution and delivery.

• Proven development and scripting background with experience in one of the following languages: Python, Bash, Golang

• Handson experience with on-premises or on cloud-based infrastructure such as AWS, Azure, GCP

• Experience with Terraform or similar configuration management tools like Chef, Puppet, Ansible.

• Experience deploying, provisioning, and administering production SaaS systems

• Exposure to Jenkins or similar build automation tools and CI/CD orchestration tools

• Exposure to Observability solutions like third-party monitoring, logging, and remediation services (e.g., Wavefront, Prometheus, Grafana, Nagios, SolarWinds, Elasticsearch, StackStorm etc.)

• Exposure to container technologies and microservice architecture like Kubernetes, Docker Swarm etc.

• Good to have exposure on writing code for Kubernetes operators.

What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

The hiring manager for this role is Gaurav Bulchandani, TSRE Manager. Gaurav joined VMware last year after managing the SRE team at RMS for past five years focussed around hosting applications on CICD pipelines and managing Kubernetes infrastructure. Prior to this, Gaurav was an individual contributor in Microsoft, Adobe and TCS focused around database platforms like SQL Server, Oracle, MongoDB and Cassandra.

The core team at present is made up of 4 software engineers that work closely with the various engineering teams across the Tanzu SaaS portfolio. The team is distributed across APJ, EMEA & AMER and works closely with teams spanning the globe.
