Department Overview:

This role will sit within Data Business CoE team Bain Capability Network (BCN) and will be working with Bain’s Private Equity Group (PEG) Data Ventures team.

In 2004, the firm established its presence in the Indian market by opening the Bain Capability Center in Gurugram, now renamed as Bain Capability Network (BCN). The BCN plays a critical role in supporting Bain’s case teams and initiatives globally to help with analytics and research across all industries and capabilities.

Bain’s Private Equity Group (PEG) is the leading consulting partner to the private equity industry and its key stakeholders, with a global practice more than three times larger than any competitor. Our network of more than 1,000 experienced professionals serves private equity and institutional investor clients across the investment life cycle, from deal generation and due diligence to portfolio value creation and exit planning.

PEG Data Ventures team’s mission is to build ventures that serve Bain clients, teams, and the broader institutional investor space with proprietary software and data products. The organization drives development, commercialization, and day-to-day running of Bain’s proprietary datasets, data and software businesses.

Position Summary:

We are developing a suite of data and software products to transform how the private equity industry, one of the less digitalized industries historically, obtains and consumes data to generate key investment insights.

This is an opportunity to drive development of PEG’s cutting-edge big data aggregation and analytics platform and user applications that help investors answer questions in the private equity investment process. The platform you are working with will transform how deal sourcing, screening, and diligence is done using big data.

Your primary mission will be to drive data quality in our proprietary knowledge graph that will be the foundation to our platform. You will design, perform, and improve scalable processes to ensure the knowledge graph has high quality data that holds up to Bain standards. You will continuously assess data health of the knowledge graph and evaluate quality of new data sources we bring into this graph. You will clean datasets and tag data to train Machine Learning algorithms that can learn from you and scale quality to millions of entities in our knowledge graph. As part of the team, you will be looked to take ownership of data quality and offer pragmatic, scalable solutions.

BCN Databusiness CoE associate will work closely with the BCN Manager, Director, Product Director, General Manager, Bain Partners, and the Data Business COE to build and deliver a commercially successful product that spans core sectors across all regions.

Essential Functions:

• Analyze multiple datasets and ensure compliance to a common data framework and taxonomy

• Execute pre-built scripts and build competency to improve them over a period of time

• Understand business context of the underlying data source and calculation methodology of key performance indicators (signals)

• Ensure strict compliance to legal guidelines while working on data from external and internal sources

• Collaborate with Bain partners, product LT and multiple stakeholders across product’s Commercial, Product and Operations teams on a day-to-day basis

• Candidate should have a technical bent of mind, ability to learn SQL and Python on the job with oversight from the PL/TM

• Execute workplans set up by Senior members of the team and ask clarifying questions in case of conflicting priorities

Qualifications:

• Work experience:

o Required: 3+ years of experience in areas related to Data Management, Business Intelligence or Business Analytics. Hands-on experience in data handling and Python

o Preferred: 2+ years of experience working at a data provider, data business, business intelligence firm; ideally at a firm catering to financial, strategy sectors

o Preferred: 1+ years of experience working at a data quality assurance role (cleaning, validation, etc…)

• Education Required:

Incumbent should be a graduate/post graduate from top-tier institute or have pursued a statistical/analytical course from a tier 1 university

Preferred:

Concentration in a quantitative discipline such as Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, Econometrics, Business Analytics, or Market Research is strongly preferred.

• Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

o Previous experience in data quality management and data frameworks

o Willingness to learn SQL and/or Python; current understanding of SQL and/or Python is a plus

o Ability to combine business context and technical implementation is preferred

o Exceptional interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills

o Preferred: Track record of documenting knowledge and implementing/improving own and peers’ work processes

o Exceptional prioritization and time management skills

o Highly organized and pays attention to detail
