Department Overview: ABOUT RISK MANAGEMENT @ OPORTUN We are growing our world-class team of mission-driven risk managers who are passionate about broadening financial inclusion by untapping insights from alternative data. Be part of the team responsible for developing and running Oportun’s marketing optimization platform that leverage Oportun’s core intellectual property for scoring risk for underserved consumers that often lack a traditional credit score or are mis-scored by traditional credit bureaus. In this role you will be working with large and diverse alternative data sets and machine learning to execute multi-product and multi-channel marketing programs. You will also drive growth and optimize marketing spend across multiple products and channels by leveraging alternative data to help predict which consumers would likely be interested in one of Oportun’s affordable, credit building lending products. Overview:
As the Sr. Director of Data Science and Analytics, you will lead and scale data science, data engineering and analytics teams. You will manage teams responsible for enhancing and monitoring performance of Oportun’s AI driven intellectual property and building data infrastructure leveraged for business intelligence, machine learning and artificial intelligence. Your teams will play a critical role in managing risk, profitability, digital marketing, customer experience and fraud at Oportun. The ideal Sr. Director of Data Science and Analytics candidate will have a demonstrated track record of building high performing teams and delivering cutting edge data infrastructure and Machine Learning/AI driven solutions. The Sr. Director of Data Science and Analytics must have a passion for developing a team culture that inspires excellence in driving business results, collaboration in how we deliver it and the innovation required to broaden financial inclusion.

Oportun’s Data Science and Analytics team is growing rapidly and driving Oportun’s AI driven, mobile first strategy leveraging the latest and greatest technology! We work in a highly collaborative and agile environment with a variety of teams such as Engineering and Product Management to build the next generation of AI driven solutions used to manage risk, profitability, digital marketing, customer experience and fraud. Responsibilities:

Qualifications:

• It is critical that you understand how to leverage cloud-based machine learning and data infrastructure and automation to deliver AI driven solutions to solve business problems
• And, how to scale to a 40-person Data Science/Analytics team, while building a highly collaborative culture
• 7+ years of proven experience in managing a global Data Science and Analytics teams through directors, managers, and individual contributors.
• 5+ years of experience leveraging machine learning techniques such as Gradient Boosting, Clustering, Logistic Regression or Random Forest to solve real world problems
• 5+ years of experience with data extraction, cleaning, analysis and building reusable data pipelines; Proficient in SQL, Spark SQL and/or Hive
• 3+ years of experience in leveraging modern machine learning toolset and programming languages such as Python, R or Scala
• Track record as a highly successful, Data Science/Analytics leader in a cloud-based environment and a champion of best practices
• Proven reputation as a highly credible and collaborative partner to Engineering and Product teams
• Strong ability to build relationships with internal leadership at all levels, along with effective interpersonal, presentation and communication skills.

• Bachelor’s degree Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering or Economics or other quantitative discipline

PREFERRED/NICE-TO-HAVE SKILLS/EXPERIENCE

• Proven track record of building high-performance Data Science/Analytics teams startup
• Experience with financial systems, payment systems and/or credit decisioning systems, preferably in loans or similar products.
