Job Summary

The Research Associate will develop/design, pursue funding for, implement, evaluate and publish research studies related to older adult programs of health research with a particular focus on physical and social health, health equity and/or implementation science (Principal Investigators, Drs. Heather McKay and Joanie Sims Gould). This position requires a strong research background, excellent writing skills and familiarity with requirements and guidelines related to relevant grant funding agencies (e.g., CIHR, MSFHR, Vancouver Foundation). The Researcher will have the ability to communicate effectively with co-investigators, government and community partners (and other knowledge users).

Note: This is a 80% FTE, 1 year contract position.

ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS

The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Drs. Heather McKay and Joanie Sims Gould. They will also interact closely with other partners (Active Aging Research Team (AART) members, all research collaborators (e.g., faculty at UBC and other universities, government and community partners) and granting agencies.

WORK PERFORMED

The successful candidate will:

• design, implement and evaluate health research studies and related programs. This includes to plan, manage, coordinate and communicate research processes and outcomes to collaborators across a diverse group of community partners (e.g., physios and physicians seeking to refer patients to a prehabilitation program)
• identify research synergies and create opportunities for new avenues of research;
• set priorities and goals, prepare budgets and forecast specific study staffing requirements;
• help prepare and submit grant applications;
• co-write and submit research papers related to the focussed areas of research;
• identify, build and facilitate linkages with researchers, funding and other agencies (e.g. CIHR, MSFHR and Vancouver Foundation);
• engage with and establish new relationships with relevant government and community partners;
• create and manage a study report document that spans application to approval stages and final reports for the study; ensure that relevant research staff meet all deadlines and requirements at all institutional levels;
• manage regulatory documents that span study approval, amendments and renewal process;
• write ethics review applications; review protocols, agreements and contracts for ethical integrity and accuracy;
• gather, review and synthesize relevant literature;
• develop knowledge mobilization strategies and products; support results dissemination;
• organize and lead research and project team meetings;
• design data analysis plans; oversee data management for specific studies; ensure data quality
• conduct data analysis and interpret findings;
• provide expertise in the area of health research related to physical and social health outcomes, healthy equity, health promotion, prehabilitation and implementation science in older adults
• engage regularly and mentor/guide graduate trainees; lead/support other AART activities (e.g., journal club; symposia; course preparation and instruction (e.g., implementation science 1010)).

CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR

This position requires research experience, good will, excellent project coordination and communication skills, tact, judgment and discretion in working with various senior professionals and collaborating with internal and external agencies that support health promoting programs and health research. Must display knowledge, confidentiality, awareness, and sensitivity to personal data and other issues. Errors in decision making may compromise the reputation of UBC, Faculty of Medicine, the PDF supervisor; lead and co-investigators on projects, the affiliated Center, the larger research team and community collaborators.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

This person will be given wide latitude and independence under the direction of Drs. Heather McKay and Joanie Sims-Gould.

SUPERVISION GIVEN

Provides direction, content knowledge and expertise to trainees (provides mentorship) and the larger research team. Provides functional direction to researchers in their areas of expertise. May manage research staff.
