Position Title: Staff Accountant
Anticipated Hours 10am-6pm ET M-F
Position Summary An accounting practice dedicated specifically to nonprofit clients is looking for a Remote Staff Accountant to join their team. This position assists in maintaining financial oversight for nonprofit organizations, using independent judgment, and performing advanced and specialized accounting assignments, such as month-end review, reconciliations, and reporting according to a defined scope of work for each client. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Duties and tasks are varied but standardized. Under the direction of the Principal Consultant and Accounting Consultant, the Staff Accountant works on assignments that are semi-routine in nature where ability to recognize deviation from accepted practice is required. The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
· Makes routine choices within established procedures
· Performs basic troubleshooting to reconcile account balances and inquiry to obtain missing information or verify unusual data
· Compiles and sorts documents, such as invoices and checks, substantiating business transactions
· Verifies and posts details of business transactions, such as funds received and disbursed, and totals accounts to ledgers or computer spreadsheets/databases
· Audits invoices against purchase orders, researches discrepancies, and approves for payment
· Prepares customer invoices according to agreements
· Prepares and processes payroll, taxes, and benefits according to each client’s employment policies
· Reviews credit card transactions to ensure compliance with client policy, records transactions and reconciles for payment
· Prepares vouchers, invoices, checks, account statements, reports, and other records, and reviews for accuracy
· Extracts general ledger information
· For applicable clients, monitors loans and accounts payable and receivable to ensure that payments are up to date
· Reconciles report discrepancies and problems
· Codes data for input to financial data processing system according to company procedures
· Assists employees, vendors, clients, or customers by answering questions related to accounts, procedures, and services
· Applies proper coding and has familiarity with a client’s grant structure.
· Assists with data entry as it relates to preparing 1099s and the 990 Series (990, 990-EZ, 990-N) returns.
· Completes projects related to sourcing of new clients, including providing research on potential new clients (based on clear instructions provided by Principal Consultant)
· Provides administrative assistance to Principal Consultant as it relates to preparation of meetings, onboarding clients, etc.
· Completes 40 hours of continuing education annually, to be tracked through CCH’s Compliance Manager
· Takes incoming calls utilizing Google Voice on behalf of the firm, takes messages, and communicating internally using Ring Central
· Tracks completion of assigned tasks utilizing Asana
· Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
· Bachelor’s Degree (B.A.) in Accounting from a four-year college or university or 5+ years of nonprofit or government experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
· Previous experience working with multiple clients, such as a CPA firm or similar.
· 5 years experience working with nonprofit clients preferred.
· Possesses all basic and some advanced skills and knowledge of accounting functions.
· Experience with a variety of accounting software packages, including QuickBooks Online, Melio Payments, Corpay One, OnPay, Gusto, Xero, and OLTPro (although training will be provided to ensure competence)
· Strong knowledge of accounting as applied to nonprofit organizations.
· Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks
· Exceptional organization and time management skills
· Past experience working in a remote work environment
· Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
· Ability to apply discretion, and trust with confidential company information
