Americares India Foundation (AIF) is an FCRA registered, health-focused relief and development organization operating from Mumbai since 2006. The team strives to saves lives and improve health for people affected by urban poverty or disaster with life-changing health programs, medicines, medical supplies, and emergency aid. AIF plays the role of catalyst with local and state governments to improve access to healthcare in partnership with CSR funding entities and foundations.

Since 2006 , AIF has responded to more than fifty emergencies across India providing relief, supplies and health centre recovery. Our urban health model aims to augment universal access to healthcare for the urban slumdwellers at 130 sites in Mumbai. Working with eight state governments we are strengthening Ayushman Bharat Health & Wellness Centre program of MoH. We are driving antimicrobial stewardship for human health by establishing a model program at eleven mid-size d hospital sites across seven states. Our community-based programs address the growing challenge of non-communicable diseases among the urban slum dwellers and are transforming children as health ambassadors of the society.

AIF’s corporate office is in Mumbai with field offices and representation across multiple states in India. Our 12,000 square foot warehouse near Mumbai serves as a distribution centre for our emergency responses, medicine security, and primary care programs.

The FY23 annual budget of AIF was approximately USD 5 million. During the Covid-19 pandemic Americares mobilized humanitarian aid worth more than USD 15 million supporting more than 20 states across the country.

The AIF office and team has grown significantly in size, capacity, and program footprint. We are now poised to scale our scope and impact and are looking for a leader who will lead deepening our programmatic impact and expanded fundraising with corporate CSR, foundations and through innovative approaches.

About the position:

The Country Director is an executive role to expand Americares India Foundation’s (AIF) growth potential by establishing new program partnerships with CSRs and foundations and to lead program implementation for deepening health impact. The Country Director will work with Americares headquarters and the AIF Board of Directors to drive the strategic vision for Americares India. They will represent Americares in India with external constituents and develop and maintain positive relationships with government, multilateral organizations , and NGO partners in addition to leading a growing team .

The Country Director will lead the business development with corporates and foundations to build new programmatic partnerships and raise funds. In coordination with the leadership team, they will manage the finances, operations, lead staff, and provide oversight for Americares programs in India. They will be based in Mumbai with travel to program sites throughout India with average travel time of 20 percent.

Key Outcomes:

In the first 90 days, the Country Director will:

• Understand Americares and AIF’s organizational history, current business, program model, and operations
• Interface with the AIF board and team members to understand their expectations, aspirations and needed support
• Share the ir first perspective s about the organization, programs, people.
• Learn and live Americares values.
• Complete all require d new hire onboarding trainings.
• Meet all existing donor and program partners , including key government offices .

In the first 6 months, the Country Director will:

• Provide hands-on support and guidance to the team in the implementation of ongoing programs .
• Review and i dentify opportunities for process improvements across functions .
• Identify potential donors for program expansion and pitch for partnerships .
• Share a mid-term plan with a clear action plan for improving current program implementation, business processes and fundraising

In the first year, the Country Director will

• Prepare the groundwork for an Americares India strategy and operational plan for FY 25-29
• Onboard at least two new donor organizations , including one f or multiyear funding

Duties and Responsibilities:

Strategy, Vision & Operations

• Aligned with Americares global vision and India CSR landscape, will develop a strategic plan for Americares India
• Build a robust operational plan to achieve the strategic objectives through effective implementation

New Business Development & Donor Engagement

• Engage existing and new donors for multiyear funding for program partnerships
• Diversify sources of funding for Americares India

Program Implementation

• Directly lead effective program implementation and the necessary administrative and operational lines of business to ensure proper program implementation in a manner consistent with program design and Indian law, Americares policies, procedures, and program vision .
• Anticipate administrative and operational gaps in program implementation, issues and risks and , based on evolving needs, priorities, and opportunities , conduct needs analyses and make recommendations .
• Facilitate close coordination with HQ teams in Global P rograms, Emergency Programs and technical advisors .

Financial Management and Compliance

• Have o verall responsibility for fiscal soundness of country operation s and maintenance of effective internal controls, including but not limited to effective cash management, and oversight of financial reporting and budgeting .
• Ensure India office compliance with HQ and local policies and statutory regulations and requirements, including timely financial reporting to HQ , donors, and Indian government entities as required .

Field Office Operations/People and Talent Management

• Lead the Americares India team and supervise direct reports .
• Provide leadership, promote professionalism and teamwork, build working relationships, and mentor all Americares India staff members to work effectively and as representatives of Americares .
• Partner with HQ Human Resources team to adapt and implement global policies for field office operations, ensuring that policies are in line with local regulations and link to organizational policies and procedures .
• Ensure compliance with all labor laws and laws governing operation as a registered NGO in India .
• In coordination with Americares HQ, identify human resource needs and recruit and retain staff to meet those needs .
• Oversee employee and overall team performance and annual performance review process
• Lead diversity, equity, and inclusion practices and systems .with employees, donors, community members, and other stakeholders.
• Collaborate with mental health staff and People and Talent to actively promote the well-being of staff

Communications

• Report to HQ and AIF Board of Directors in a timely and thorough way .
• Ensure submission of regular reports o f country and program activities to HQ.
• Coordinate with Americares HQ, including Operations, Programs, Finance, Development, and Communications , as appropriate .
• Lead external communications in country in coordination with Marketing and Communications at HQ and the AIF Communications Coordinator .
• Represent the organization at national, regional, and global conferences, coordination meetings, working groups, public events and with the press .

Representation and Coordination

• Serve as legal representative for Americares India Foundation – executing all corresponding communications and functions in an effective, professional, and timely manner .
• Serve as official representative of Americares in all government and community affairs, actively engage local stakeholders and pursue collaboration and partnerships with other NGOs, INGOs, relevant Ministries, and private sector .
• Collaborate with HQ and facilitate AIF team leadership to ensure team s ecurity, h ealth, and s afety .
• Update, adapt, implement and secure full adherence of all AIF staff to global safety and security policies .
• Coordinate security planning, monitoring, and systems with peer organizations, the UN system, and local authorities .
• Conduct discussions to identify and determine approaches to address staff stress levels and sense of security .

These competencies are required for the role:

• 15+ distinguished years in a leadership position in a multinational nonprofit organization or foundation
• Postgraduate degree in business administration, public administration, public health, or related field
• Demonstrated experience in program leadership, including , but not limited to oversight of implementation, developing budgets, supervising financial reporting, and ensuring compliance with donor rules and regulations
• Demonstrated experience in organizational governance
• Demonstrated experience in resource mobilization, corporate social responsibility, and other funding avenues
• Demonstrated experience with donor management and stewardship
• Excellent people leaderships skills and experience managing teams/organization with more than 100 employees
• Demonstrated leadership of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as the valued behaviors aligned with Americares values
• Excellent decision-making and judgement
• Excellent communication skills in Hindi and English, including high proficiency in written English
• Proficiency in Office 365 including Word, Excel, Teams, PowerPoint and SharePoint
• Willingness and ability to travel as needed (up to 20% time)
