Summary:

This is for a systems engineering (SE) position in the Systems Engineering, Integration and Test (SEIT) team. As a member of this SEIT team, Systems Safety engineer ensures compliance with required regulations, procedures and policies with primary focus on aviation safety. The ideal candidate will seamlessly coordinate across multiple Integrated Product Teams (IPTs), ensuring continued safe operations of the Aircraft and Systems. Facilitates identification of safety and environmental risks and promotes reduction or elimination of potential accidents, occupational injuries, illnesses, deaths and safety-related financial losses. Systems safety engineers leads, develop, administer, and enforce regulations and standards concerning aviation safety, including (1) the airworthiness of aircraft and aircraft systems, (2) the competence of pilots, mechanics, and other airmen personnel, and (3) safety aspects of aviation facilities, equipment and procedures. This position requires knowledge and skill in the Development, operation, maintenance or manufacture of aircraft and aircraft systems.

This position provides consultation and technical direction to design teams and management teams on near term and longer-range projects relative to System safety requirements and risk estimation and management, including applicable regulations and standards.

• Demonstrate expert domain knowledge in two or more Avionics systems namely, Flight Management System, Displays System, high-integrity Radio and Communication, SATCOM, Flight Controls systems, or other high criticality airplane systems
• Lead, Identify, analyze, review, and mitigate potential hazards and risks associated with system designs in order to achieve enterprise and customer safety objectives while ensuring that the systems remain operationally responsive and effective
• Develops basis of certification in accordance with the commercial / foreign military airworthiness certification standards.
• Review and approve stage gate exits (SRR, PDR, CDR, MRR, TRR, CERT and QUAL)
• Leads the SRR PDR, CDR, MRR, TRR, Certification/Qualification reviews
• Checks for reuse and productivity improvement on overall architecture
• Review commonality in architecture
• Propose architectural enhancements for optimal safety solution
• Perform systematic and comprehensive safety assessments on the system architecture, integrated design, Hardware/software, support equipment, and installation of the subsystems, and experiments to ensure that relevant safety requirements are met
• Ensure system safety planning, processes, procedures, and protections are properly implemented in support operations in a satellite production facility
• Defining system safety design practices for use across BCA (Boeing Commercial Airplanes), including establishing processes, instruction and guidance. Design practices include those used for new design and existing fleet safety
• Partner with Technical Fellowship to author and maintain safety engineering Design Practices
• Ensuring Safety Management System goals are well understood in product safety Design Practices
• Innovating and benchmarking new methods of ensuring product safety like STPA (System Theoretic Process Analysis), SCFTA (Safety Critical Functional Thread Analysis), and Bow-Tie analysis
• Investigating MBSE tools to digitally connect, store, and integrate critical safety deliverables like Functional Hazards Assessments, Fault Trees and Cascading Effects Analyses
• Provide real-time support to critical and hazardous operations in a satellite production facility
• Develop contingency plans and procedures to ensure safe operating conditions are maintained in both nominal and off-nominal situations involving flight hardware, software, support equipment, and/or personnel interaction
• Coordinate and collaborate across stakeholders (engineering, EHS, technicians, quality, leadership, customers) to ensure safety is integral to all activities and operations
• Sustain and support the development of system safety planning, requirements, analysis tools, and data packages
• Review engineering design specifications, test operations procedures, change proposals, deficiency reports, exceptions, and/or deviation/waiver requests for potential flight/ground test safety impacts
• Participating in incident investigations and root cause/corrective action analyses as requested.
• Support preparation of presentations, analyses, and reports for government/customer & ESG safety boards, System Safety Working Groups (SSWGs), program design reviews, and test/mission readiness reviews

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

• Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, electronics, aerospace, mathematics, physics or chemistry with17 or more years’ experience, Master’s with 15 or more years’ experience or PhD with 13 or more years’ experience with aerospace System Safety Engineering requirements, design and analysis
• Experience in design/development or in integrating multiple systems into aircraft platforms with special focus on safety requirements development and associated hazard analyses.
• Experience with Aircraft systems integration activities Ability to perform a variety of hazard analyses across the full product life cycle to include Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA), Subsystem Hazard Analysis (SSHA), System Hazard Analysis (SHA), Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA), System Level of Rigor Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Safety Assessment Report (SAR) and System Safety Risk Assessments, Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA).

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

• 15+ years of aerospace industry experience focused towards system engineering activities
• 7+ years of experience as a technical lead or leading technical team projects regulated under FAA/EASA, ICAO, DGCA, CEMILAC, NASA, and/or Department of Defense (DoD) programs performing activities such as; trade studies, design work, or safety analysis.
• 7+ years of experience with system safety analysis
• 7+ years of experience with unit fleet safety risk management processes like COSP (Continuous Operation Safety Process) or MIL-STD-882, and related DoD, FAA, or international reporting requirements
• 5+ years of Systems Engineering experience in fundamentals such as requirement validation/verification, functional integration, and Concept of Operations
• Experience with aircraft System Safety analysis guidelines such as MIL-STD-882E, ARP-4761, ARP-4754
• Familiarity with RTCA/DO-160, DO-178,DO-254, DO-313, FAA 14 CFR Part 25
• Preferred experience utilizing model-based systems engineering tools like Cameo
• Experience with aerospace systems engineering, together with the ability to visualize how information technology opportunities might be used to further the goals of the organization
• Preferred experience presenting technical information, analyses, or proposals to senior leaders, regulators, or customers
• Preferred Familiarity with Boeing aircrafts.
• Working understanding of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) principles.
• Experience maintaining the Hazard Tracking System throughout the product life cycle.
• Technical competency and skills with project management concepts/tools.
• Additional certificates related to aviation/aerospace system safety, accident/incident analysis, safety program management from reputed universities or organizations preferred

Typical Education & Experience:

• Bachelor or Master in Engineering (preferably in Mechanical / Aerospace / Production Engineering or equivalent field) with 15 + years of experience.
