Azure Data/SQL is building up a team of talented engineers who can help define, design, and build the next set of state-of-the-art database technologies to make Azure SQL Database and SQL Server the best place to do operational data analytics. As engineering manager, you will lead a part of this team, work closely with our database experts, and solve challenging problems to enhance the analytics capabilities of SQL Server Engine. While SQL Server with its columnstore indexes and vectorized, batch-mode query processing is already a great analytical platform, we want to take this to the next level by increasing performance, adding capabilities, enabling new scenarios & enabling a seamless transition to scale-out analytics with Azure Synapse Analytics.

Responsibilities

As engineering manager, you will lead and work with some of the smartest engineers in the industry the latest technology in SQL Azure Database and SQL Server on technologies such as:

• Improving SQL DB/SQL Server’s in-database analytics capabilities, by increasing performance, enhancing existing functionality like columnstore indexes and query processing, and building new features like data lifecycle management.
• Enhancing SQL Server’s capabilities for processing time series data.
• Enabling advanced Machine Learning scenarios, through for example integration with Azure ML.
• Enabling seamless integration with Azure Synapse analytics, data lake & scale-out analytics, through for example technologies like Synapse Link or enhancing SQL Server’s support for open data formats like Parquet.

As engineering manager, you will be one of the founding members and help us grow and shape the team, vision, and engineering culture. You will be entrusted to execute on a mission with your team and are expected to provide both team and technical leadership. You’ll be hands-on with technology and deeply involved in designs and technical decision making. Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Engineering or Mathematics or Physics or IT technical discipline or in place of 3+ years of internship or 3+ years of industry engineering experience
• 5+ years of programming experience in Java OR C++ OR C OR object-oriented programming
• Technical leadership experience, as engineering manager or technical lead

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience leading and managing a team of engineers to build and ship production grade in-cloud or on-premise software or services
• Experience in systems programming/C/C++
• Design and development experience in database engines, column stores, query processing, performance engineering and/or operating system internals
• Understanding of data structures, algorithms, and distributed systems
• Get excited by the challenge of hard technical problems
• Great curiosity and willingness to question
• High enthusiasm, integrity, ingenuity, results-orientation, self-motivation, and resourcefulness in a fast-paced environment
• Have a deep desire to work collaboratively, solve problems with groups, find win/win solutions and celebrate successes
